MIRPUR: The revised presidential election schedule of Azad Jammu Kashmir would be held on August 16.
According to the AJK Election Commission, polling for presidential election would be held on August 16, instead of August 15. The schedule for AJK president’s election has been changed because of observance of India’s Independence Day on August 15 as Black Day by Kashmiris throughout the world.
Members of both the houses of the AJK Parliament – the Legislative Assembly and the Council – would elect the new president. The stipulated constitutional term of the sitting AJK President Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan ends on August 24.
According to the schedule, nomination papers for the president’s office could be filed with the State’s chief election commissioner at his residence in Muzaffarabad on August 11. The scrutiny process would be held the same day but candidates can withdraw their nominations by August 12.
Polling will be held on August 16 between 10am and 3pm at AJK’s Legislative Assembly in Muzaffarabad. According to an official notification, AJK Election Commission Secretary Mian Naeem Ullah will perform as the ‘Presiding Officer’ in the scheduled election for AJK’s president.
