ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday rejected the decision of Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision to delay polls in NA-60 Rawalpindi constituency after Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz’s (PML-N) leader, Hanif Abbasi, sentenced life imprisonment.
On July 22, Hanif Abbasi, who was the main contender of Awami Muslim League (AML) leader Sheikh Rasheed in NA-60, was sentenced life imprisonment in the ephedrine quota case after which ECP rejected polls in that constituency citing legal provisions regarding the fairness of elections.

On July 24, Sheikh Rasheed filed a petition against ECP’s decision in apex court which was rejected and the court decided to take up his plea later.

A three-member bench presided over by the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) heard the appeal today and ordered ECP to hold the by-election on the seat on time.
The AML chief praised Justice Nisar over the decision and took back his petition against the ECP order.
Rasheed has contested and won the July 25 General Election from Rawalpindi’s NA-62 seat.
